2007 Awards

GEORGE FOSTER PEABODY AWARD 2007

The public radio series Crossing East won a Peabody Award in April 2007. KUOW's Ruby de Luna produced "Manilamen", a little known story about the the first Filipino explorers in America. Ruby also produced a story about the large number of Filipina women that became nurses in the post-WWII United States. Today the George Foster Peabody Awards are often cited as the most prestigious awards in electronic media.

This award honors the top civic minded citizens, businesses, and organizations of the year. The Civic Awards were initiated by the League in 1960, in an effort to focus attention on the often unappreciated efforts by public officials, private citizens, and organizations who have worked to improve local government. The awards are also intended to inspire other public officials and citizens to become more involved in building healthy civic communities.

Ruby de Luna wins an AAJA Excellence in Journalism Radio Award for her five-part series on food Lefse, Rice and Fry Bread: A History of Washington Through Food. AAJA National Awards recognize and encourage excellence among Asian American journalists and outstanding coverage of Asian American issues.The story was done as part of KUOW’s Program Venture Fund

RTNDA EDWARD R. MURROW 2005 REGIONAL AWARDS

KUOW is honored to receive two Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) for 2005. Both stories were done as part of KUOW’s Program Venture Fund.

A panel of judges comprised of radio and television news managers from various sized markets across the country voted from entries nationwide. KUOW won for the Northwest region of the US, which includes Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. Regional winners automatically become eligible for the national RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Awards competition in September 2005.
