KUOW 94.9 FM Public Radio General Manager Honored with 2005 Edward R. Murrow Award

(May 24, 2005) Seattle, WA: Wayne Roth, General Manager of KUOW 94.9, NPR News & Information, received the 2005 Edward R. Murrow Award from the Center of Public Broadcasting on Monday, May 2nd. The highest honor given for individual achievement in this industry, the Murrow award recognizes individuals whose work has fostered the growth, quality, and positive image of public radio.

The award is named for the legendary reporter, producer, executive and government official, who championed responsible, courageous and imaginative uses of the electronic media during his distinguished 30-year career.

In presenting the award, Kenneth Y. Tomlinson, CPB board chair, credited Roth with being "one of a small group of forward-looking station leaders" and a key figure in shaping today's dynamic and successful public radio system.

Roth, who has led KUOW since 1983, is a two-time member of the NPR board of directors. In the 1980's, he played a critical role in reinventing NPR, moving it from reliance on federal funding, and directing those funds to the stations instead. Roth has pioneered most of the significant initiatives undertaken by public radio from offering stations more choice in their program investments, to increasing participation of minority and rural stations, to pushing for more regional collaboration. Roth is also a founder of the Station Resource Group, which has become a focal point for research, analysis and policy development for the public radio community.

KUOW is the region's premier award-winning public radio station for news information and cultural programming serving the Puget Sound region, Western Washington, and Southern British Columbia at 94.9 FM and at 90.3 FM in Bellingham, WA. KUOW and KXOT are streamed live worldwide via the Internet at kuow.org. On May 1st 2004, KUOW became the first public radio station in our region to provide our listeners with KUOW in HDTM Radio clarity. The station is operated by KUOW Puget Sound Public Radio (PSPR) under an agreement with the station licensee, the University of Washington. PSPR is a private non-profit corporation established in 1999 and is governed by a community board.

KUOW is a founding member of National Public Radio (NPR), an affiliate of American Public Media, Public Radio International, and a member of the Associated Press (AP). KUOW is a member of NPAN - administrating entity of The Northwest News Network (N3). For more information, visit kuow.org
