Steve Scher

Senior Host, Weekday

Steve Scher came to KUOW as a graduate work–study student in 1986. He stayed because of the quality of stories being produced and the intelligence of his colleagues. Over the years, as a producer and host, Steve has had the opportunity to learn from activists, scientists, authors and KUOW listeners.

Steve has lived in Seattle since 1979. He moved here with his wife, who was pursuing a theater degree from the UW. She has gone on to work in many Seattle area theaters. She is now the business agent for her union. Her experiences have helped inform Steve's conversations about the workplace. They have two sons who attended Seattle's public schools. Their experiences have helped direct Steve's work at KUOW. Over the years Steve has received journalism fellowships that have taken him to Asia, Africa and Europe.  The stories told on Weekday, from education to the environment, are built upon these personal experiences.

Funding Higher Education In 2013

UW President Michael Young

The presidents of Washington’s six public universities have a deal for state legislators in Olympia. They would hold back on tuition increases for two years. In return, the Legislature would spend an additional $225 million on higher education. Will legislators agree? Adding to the money woes is the mandate from the state Supreme Court to amply fund K-12 education — meaning even less money making its way to public colleges and universities. We discuss funding higher education in 2013 with University of Washington President Michael Young.

University of Washington professor David Domke joins us.

Congress Readies For The Next "Cliff"

Gray clouds fill the sky over the Capitol on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, the day closed-door meetings and votes negated a fiscal cliff of across-the-board tax increases and sweeping spending cuts.

The next cliff looms in Washington, DC, as the US Treasury runs out of borrowing authority at the end of February. There may be a decision about across-the-board spending cuts known as "sequestration," as well as a debate over the social safety net.

Will Democrats agree to cuts to Social Security and Medicare? We talk with economics writer James Kwak about the political support for smaller government and less revenue.

It’s Friday — time to review the week’s news with Eli Sanders, Knute BergerDavid Horsey and Bruce Ramsey. The House of Representatives voted 257-167 late Tuesday night to avoid the "fiscal cliff." The deal keeps the Bush tax cuts in place for individuals making less than $400,000 a year, extends federal emergency unemployment benefits and Washington state's sales tax deduction, and sets up Fiscal Cliff 2 in just a few weeks.
