Tom Perrotta on his new novel: 'I was trying to write against my own inclination'

Author Tom Perrotta made his name in 1998 when, still unpublished, one of his manuscripts was picked up for movie treatment. The quirky tale told in “Election,” starring Mathew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon, became a surprise hit.

And Perrotta was off. In 2004 his novel “Little Children” received wide praise. He co-wrote the screenplay for the film, which earned him an Academy Award nomination. His novel “The Leftovers” was turned into an acclaimed HBO series.

Perrotta’s new novel, “Mrs. Fletcher,” concerns what happens to Eve Fletcher, her son Brendan and the circle of people they interact with when he goes off to college. As he delves into issues of love, sex, identity, parenthood, friendship and loneliness, Perrotta’s writing captures contemporary culture with sharpness and wit. It’s no wonder the word gifted is often used to describe him.

Perrotta read from “Mrs. Fletcher” and took questions at the Central Library on August 17. Sonya Harris recorded the event.
