Lucia Perillo's 'Luck is Luck'
07/10/2006
Her work as a park ranger, 20 years of living with multiple sclerosis and her imaginative musings on pop culture, art, music, physics, history, and mythology are all woven into the writing of Olympia poet Lucia Perillo. Lucia Perillo speaks with Dave Beck and reads from her latest book Luck is Luck. Later in the hour, Nancy Pearl's book reviews.Today's Featured Music Selection: Songs Without Words
We'll complement the poetry of Lucia Perillo with some musical poems of Felix Mendelssohn. The German Romantic Mendelssohn composer was 19 years old when he composed his collection of Songs Without Words for his sister Fanny's birthday. Mendelssohn often wrote songs without words for friends and family on festive occasions. Our performance of the pieces written in 1828 are by pianist Andras Schiff.

Lucia Perillo has a rare gift for exposing the irony in the most beautiful situations. In her fourth full-length collection, Luck is Luck (Random House, 2005), the Olympia-based poet casts her keen eye on the natural world and articulates its many beautiful ironies. Perillo received a MacArthur "genius" fellowship in 2000, and earlier this year was awarded the Kingsley Tufts prize for a mid-career poet with exceptional talent. Today on The Beat she reads two poems from Luck is Luck, recorded June 1, 2006 at Open Books in Seattle.
