Marni Nixon

11/06/2006

One of the best-known and best-loved singing voices in the world, Marni Nixon dubbed songs for Natalie Wood in West Side Story, Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, and Deborah Kerr in the King and I. Marni Nixon speaks with Dave Beck and shares music from her distinguished career.

At 2:07 p.m. - Lucia Perillo
Lucia Perillo has a rare gift for exposing the irony in the most beautiful situations. In her fourth full-length collection, Luck is Luck (Random House, 2005), the Olympia-based poet casts her keen eye on the natural world and articulates its many beautiful ironies. Perillo received a MacArthur genius fellowship in 2000, and earlier this year was awarded the Kingsley Tufts prize for a mid-career poet with exceptional talent. Today on The Beat she reads two poems from Luck is Luck, recorded June 1, 2006 at Open Books in Seattle.

  • At 2:55 p.m. - James Hunter
According to Van Morrison, "James is one of the best voices, and best kept secrets, in British R'n'B and Soul." And there's no denying that James Hunter's musical style harkens back to the days of classic 50's and early 60's R&B. What's remarkable is that the same timeless quality can exist in music that is being written, performed and recorded today. Hunter's voice is smooth, brilliantly controlled and unapologetic. James Hunter plays The Triple Door tomorrow. We'll listen to cuts from his live performance in the Beat studios this past May.
