Poems for Fathers and Seattle History on Film

06/11/2007

Fathers are like superheroes. They put on special clothes and leave the house to perform mystery jobs. Today, three western Washington poets reflect on the amazing powers of dads. We also learn the history of Seattle through film and get new book reviews from Nancy Pearl.

At 2:08 p.m. - Poems for Fathers
For many of us as we grew up, our fathers retained an element of mystery: they went off every day to something called "work". Work seemed to define their lives. Even when they didn't go away to work, they'd likely spend Saturday afternoon working around the house, repairing a leaky pipe, mowing the lawn. Today, in advance of Father's Day, three western Washington poets, Joseph Green, Kathleen Flenniken and Lucia Perillo consider the way work often defines our relationships with our fathers. Joseph Green is the author of The End of Forgiveness and teaches at Lower Columbia College in Longview. Kathleen Flenniken is the author of Famous, and president of Floating Bridge Press. Lucia Perillo's most recent book is I've Heard the Vultures Singing: Field Notes on Poetry, Illness and Nature, and she was a 2000 recipient of a MacArthur Genius Award.

Seattle grew up in the age of motion pictures, and some of the most historic films from the City of Seattle Municipal Archives, Seattle's Museum of History & Industry and local documentary filmmakers have found a home this summer on the Seattle Channel. We'll talk to the Seattle Channel's Feliks Banel about some of the documentaries, archival films and vintage video from the 1920s to the 1990s that will be presented every Monday night at 8:00 p.m. beginning this evening.
