Gas Works Park and Women in Prison

11/16/2007

One person's eyesore is another person's vision. Today, landscape architect Richard Haag explains how Gas Works Park came to be. And journalist Silja Talvi tells the stories of women in prison. We also take a tour of Georgetown and get movie reviews from Robert Horton.

At 2:07 p.m. – Women Behind Bars
More and more women are doing hard time in prison. Seattle journalist Silja Talvi went behind the bars to find out what really happens there and why. She writes about what she found out in the book, Women Behind Bars: The Crisis of Women in the U.S. Prison System.

Not every architect dreams of building a park out of a polluted industrial complex. But Richard Haag is not your typical architect. Where others saw an eyesore in the hulk of a rusting gasification plant on Lake Union, Richard saw its potential. Richard takes Jeannie Yandel on a tour of that eyesore, which is now Gas Works Park.

  • At 2:50 p.m. – A Tour of Georgetown
Georgetown has officially been part of Seattle since 1910. But people who live here say the place has always seemed like its own little town. Kathy Nyland moved here 4 years ago because she said it was affordable. She's since become one of the neighborhood's most visible advocates. Today she takes Jeannie Yandel on a tour of historic downtown Georgetown.
