Hans Blix on the New Arms Race

Jenny Asarnow
11/29/2007 at 8:00 p.m.

The Cold War's over, and we don't need a new one. That's the message from Hans Blix. The Swedish diplomat led the United Nations inspection committee in Iraq from 2000–2003 that found no weapons of mass destruction. At one point, Hans Blix suspected the United States was bugging his phone. Blix says he only wishes the US listened more closely. He believes escalating arms buildups are one of the biggest threats to the world today, and the nuclear countries need to re–commit themselves to disarmament.

Hans Blix spoke at the University of Washington on October 18th, 2007. The talk was sponsored by The UW Department of Scandinavian Studies, Center for Global Studies and the UW Alumni Association.
