Hooked on the Organ and the Art of Mischief

Megan Sukys/Dave Beck
12/20/2007

Scott Hawthorn fell in love with the orchestra of sounds of the Hammond B-3 organ. Today, we find out what makes him an organ freak. We also meet an artist who draws strangers' desires, and an art critic tells us about a new exhibit that almost made him laugh out loud.

At 2:08 p.m. – Sound Reflections: Vintage Instruments, Timeless Sounds
Scott Hawthorn fell in love with the sound of the Hammond B-3 organ. When he realized that a whole orchestra could come out of a single instrument, he was hooked. Scott writes about, maintains, and transports these organs. He also rents them to clubs for visiting musicians.

At 2:40 p.m. – Gary Faigin's Art Reviews
Contemporary art is rarely, if ever, laugh-out-loud funny. So it's unlikely that a raucous atmosphere will prevail this month at the Francine Seders Gallery on Phinney Ridge, in spite of its hosting a show devoted to humor in art. Still, our art critic Gary Faigin does report cracking a few broad smiles while walking through the exhibit, and he'll tell us now what tickled his particular funny bone.

At 2:50 p.m. – Ellen Forney
A brainy female wants a male or female to drive her crazy with ice cubes. And she doesn't want to be judged. Ellen Forney illustrates that desire and others in the pages of the Seattle weekly paper The Stranger. She recently compiled the illustrations into a book, appropriately called Lust. She talks with Jeannie Yandel about drawing other people's desires.
