From Cuba to Weezer, The Century Ballroom, and Reviews with Gary Faigin

Today, Seattle violinist Irene Mitri reveals how she found inspiration in teachers from Cuba and Russia and the rock band Weezer. We also talk with the owner of The Century Ballroom about building community around dance, and we get an on–site art review from Gary Faigin.

Community gathering places are disappearing – bowling alleys, dance halls, and other recreational businesses have to struggle against commercial development in order to survive. Today, Hallie Kuperman shares how she keeps the Century Ballroom alive as a focal point for building community.

At 2:20 p.m. – Irene Mitri

You won't find great classical composers in modern rock – but contemporary music can help students develop a passion for classical performance. Irene Mitri is a Seattle–based violinist, teacher and leader of the local Cuban band Charanga Danzon. Along with Mozart, Bach and Vivaldi, Irene's been known to assign the music of the rock band Weezer to her students. Her creative approach to music education was inspired by several trips to Cuba and in her own studies with one of Russia's great violinists.

We all want work that doesn't feel like work. And some of us also want work that includes playing in the snow. Roberto Ascalon's got that job. He works with The Service Board. It's an outreach organization that works to instill civic responsibility in kids and it takes them snowboarding. Roberto's worked with kids for years, but he says he thought there was something different about The Service Board.
