News From Canada / Sound Transit 2008?

Steve Scher
06/11/2008 at 10:00 a.m.

A conversation on the week's news in Canada from our Canadian correspondent, Vaughn Palmer, political correspondent for the Vancouver Sun.

Then: Sound Transit is back. The agency has three new proposals to expand light rail and buses in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. We could see something on the ballot this fall. Last November, voters said no to a huge, multi–billion dollar roads and transit plan. A new ballot measure would drop the roads plan. Will that help transit? How did you vote on Proposition One last year? Would you support a transit–only measure this time around?

Finally, we honor Pike Place Market musician Jim Hinde today. Jim passed away in his sleep on Monday. He was a familiar site at the Market, where he regularly played for 19 years. He was the founding member of the Pike Place Market Buskers Guild and won an Emmy for co–writing and hosting the documentary Pike Place Market: Soul of the City.

Guests:
Vaughn Palmer political correspondent for the Vancouver Sun.
Rob Johnson is Regional Policy Director with Transportation Choices Coalition. The group is advocating for a transit measure on the ballot in 2008.
Mark Baerwaldt is co–founder of the No on Proposition 1 committee, which organized against last November's transit initiative. He sued Sound Transit over the first phase of light rail, and lost in 2004.

Related Event:
Sound Transit will take public comments on system expansion options tonight at Everett Station, 3201 Smith Ave., Everett. You can submit comments at Sound Transit's Web site through June 19.
