Arson Dog, The Prairie Girl's Guide to Life, and Art Reviews

Megan Sukys
09/18/2008

You have to wash gas off your hands 17 times before a dog can't smell it. We visit a fire site with Captain Stephen Baer and his dog Henny to sniff around for arson. We also highlight "The Prairie Girl's Guide to Life" and an artist who creates balancing acts with furniture.

At 2:05 p.m. – Arson Dog

You have to wash gas off your hands seventeen times before a dog won't be able to smell it anymore. That's part of the reason why the canine nose is a great tool in arson investigation. Henny is the Seattle Fire Department's first arson dog. Jeannie Yandel heads to a fire site in North Seattle to watch Henny and her owner, Captain Stephen Baer, go to work.

At 2:20 p.m. – The Prairie Girl's Guide to Life

Jennifer Worick is the self–described "white sheep" of her family. It wasn't until to she moved out to Seattle, thousands of miles from her Michigan homeland, that she finally came to terms with her blue collar upbringing. She celebrates the gifts of the simple life in her new book, "The Prairie Girl's Guide to Life." Her father helped her write the chapter on milking cows.

At 2:40 p.m. – Gary Faigin Art Review

How does an artist stand out from the crowd? By developing a very special skill set, for one. A pair of exceptional shows now at Howard House showcase two such artists: Sean Johnson, who constructs balancing acts with old furniture, and Mark Takamichi Miller, a master of layered, sculpted and textured paint. Here to discuss these two exhibitions is our art critic, Gary Faigin.

At 2:50 p.m. – Drew's Story

Many people practice yoga to build strength and flexibility of the body, but in the ancient yoga sutras, most of the writing was dedicated to the mind and spirit. Molly Lannon Kenny is a speech pathologist and the founder of Seattle's Samarya Center, a yoga studio that specializes in rehabilitation. For Molly, yoga has always been about more than movement. Molly tells Jeremy Richards how she was able to use yogic principles when working with a young Iraq War veteran named Drew, even though he was quadriplegic.
