The Ohm Necklace, Psyche in Seattle, and Tapeworms

10/17/2008

Composer Garrett Fisher joins us with stories of how the fountains and pathways of Cal Anderson Park helped him stage a modern retelling the Psyche myth. We also go in search of an "ohm" necklace and learn how to avoid getting a helping of tapeworm with your order of fish.

At 2:05 p.m. – Ohm Necklace

In India, the "ohm" symbol is ubiquitous. It hangs in temples. People draw it on paper before they write. The meaning is complex: It is religious, it is a sound, it represents the levels of consciousness. Seattle P.I. Blogger Jaya Ramesh was born in the Tamil region of India. But, since moving to the U.S. In 1989, she has struggled to find an identity that blends her Eastern roots and Western home. When she started living in Seattle, she went in search of an ohm necklace to represent her Northwest identity.

At 2:20 p.m. – Garrett Fisher: From Istanbul to Seattle

In Instanbul, Turkey, residents hear the muezzin call Muslims to prayer from the minaret of a mosque. In Seattle, Washington visitors to a local park hear evocative voices and instruments conjuring up the world of ancient Greece. As a child, Seattle Composer Garrett Fisher discovered how hearing music in unusual surroundings can be powerfully transformative. That's the experience the audience had when they heard Garrett's opera "Psyche" performed this past summer at Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill.

Garrett Fisher's "Psyche" is on stage October 17 and 18 in the Chaple at the Good Shepherd Center in Seattle's Wallingford neighborhood.

At 2:40 p.m. – Warren Etheridge on Seattle's Moviegoing Culture

Seattle is one of the most moviegoing cities in the U.S. Warren Etheredge, creator of The Warren Report and faculty member of TheFilmSchool in Seattle, reveals the three films that owe at least part of their cult status to local audiences.

At 2:50 p.m. – The Tapeworm and You

Undercooked salmon is increasingly common on restaurant menus. Raw preparations highlight the delicate texture and taste of the fresh fish. Unfortunately, they may also serve the diner a helping of tapeworm. Seattle seafood expert Jon Rowley is also contributing editor of Gourmet magazine. He just wrote about the risks of acquiring a tapeworm for Gourmet.com. He tells Megan Sukys about his fascination with the parasite — and how to avoid it.
