The Ohm Necklace, River Valley Ranch and the Black Stallion

Megan Sukys
12/05/2008

Cheesemaker Julie Steil explains how she had to rip off her acrylic fingernails and learn about udders before fulfilling her passion for cheese. We also discover the importance of an ohm necklace and hear why the Black Stallion deserves another chance at the big screen.

At 2:00 p.m. – Ohm Necklance

In India, the 'ohm' symbol is ubiquitous. It hangs in temples. People draw it on paper before they write. The meaning is complex: it is religious, it is a sound, it represents the levels of consciousness. Seattle P.I. reader/blogger Jaya Ramesh was born in the Tamil region of India. But, since moving to the US in 1989, she has struggled to find an identity that blends her Eastern roots and Western home. When she started living in Seattle, she went in search of an ohm necklace to represent her Northwest identity.

At 2:15 p.m. – River Valley Ranch

The flavor of fresh goat cheese can reveal whether the animals were grazing on summer blackberries or winter grasses before they were milked. Julie Steil can taste those details in the cheeses she makes. But the cheese is only one of the ways Julie connects with her animals. Julie shows Jeannie Yandel around River Valley Ranch, her creamery in Fall City, about 25 miles east of Seattle.

At 2:40 p.m. – Movies to Revisit on the Big Screen

Not many movies get shown on big screens after their initial runs in theaters. Lindy West thinks there are some films out there that deserve another big–screen showing. Lindy writes a weekly film column for the Stranger here in Seattle. And she's been thinking about which movies she'd like shown on the big screen again.

At 2:50 p.m. – Reforming Mothers

Some public school buildings in Chicago in the United States are extremely run–down, and as a result, many wealthy parents prefer to send their children to private schools. From Radio Netherlands Worldwide, we get the story of a group of moms in one of the more privileged neighbourhoods of the city who decided to completely spruce up their nearby school. The program "The State We're In" from Radio Netherlands Worldwide airs Sundays at 12:00 noon on KXOT, 91.7 FM (94.9 FM–2 on HD Radio).
