Malalai Joya was born in Afghanistan in 1978, but grew up in exile because her father fought against the Soviet invasion. In 2005, she became the youngest person ever elected to the Wolesi Jirga, Afghanistan's National Assembly. Joya was then suspended in 2007 for her outspoken remarks against other members.
