At 2:05pm - Kindred
If you could go back in time, what era would you like to go to? That may depend on whether you're a man or woman, and the color of your skin. In Octavia Butler’s 1979 novel, Kindred, a modern black woman is pulled back in time to a pre-Civil War plantation, becomes a slave, and rescues her white, slave-owning ancestor. Twenty-five years after its initial release, Kindred is now widely taught in colleges and is newly released in an anniversary edition. In the meantime, Octavia has become a tremendous force in the science fiction world, winning two Nebula awards, two Hugo awards and a MacArthur Genius grant. Octavia talks with Megan Sukys about remembering our painful past.

At 2:33pm - True Tales of the Shaman
The term shaman has been widely adopted by anthropologists to name a type of healer, male or female, who is "especially distinguished by their controlled use of altered states of consciousness to come into an ecstatic rapport with the invisible world." Chistina Pratt is a Portland-based Shaman, teacher, and director of Last Mask Center for Shamanic Healing. She is compiling a soon to be released Encyclopedia of Shamanism. She joins us to talk about how she adapts this ancient spiritual practice to 21st century life. The former dancer, turned Shaman, tells Dave Beck that the arts play an important role in her own practice.
