Atoning for Abu Ghraib

Steve Scher
05/10/2004 at 9:00 a.m.

One of the first things that a US soldier from Abu Ghraib prison said in an interview was that he'd never seen Geneva Convention rules for how to treat prisoners of war. Why weren’t U.S. troops trained under international rules? Where does international law and US military law intersect? Is there a double-standard? Can international law guide us right now? How can the U.S. accept guidance from the international community while still having an effective presence in Iraq?

Guests:
Ron Slye Associate Professor at the Seattle University School of Law
Vienna Colucci International Justice Specialist, Amnesty International USA
Larry Seaquist former US Navy warship captain and Pentagon strategist; he wrote an op-ed about the US military in Iraq in 5/5/04's Christian Science Monitor
