Busting Out

Steve Scher

There are few body parts imbued with more meaning and taboo than the breast -- mothers have fought for right to breastfeed their children in public, while in the meantime Victoria's Secret has made millions of dollars coming up with new ways to present and shape breasts. And Hooter's is one of the most successful restaurant chains in the country. As a society, we have a complicated relationship to breasts -- they're taboo but they're commonplace, sexy but a nuisance, they can make babies healthy and FCC chairs livid. We spend a lot of time talking about them, covering them, showcasing them, thinking about them, arguing about their appropriateness in various situations. Why do we imbue these body parts with so much significance? What's the big deal with breasts for us anyway? We try to figure it out on Weekday.
