Adapting the Arts to a Modern Business Climate

09/27/2005

We take a look at two artistic businesses that are attempting to adapt to a changing marketplace and emerging technology. Seattle's Empty Space Theater has gone through several near-death experiences over the years but has managed to hang on thanks to a loyal following and a few last-minute financial reprieves. The theater recently announced plans to move out of its Fremont location and onto the campus of Seattle University. We talk to Melanie and Allison Narver, the theater's Artistic Director about what that means the 35-year-old theater. Also, a visit with Seattle rock band Harvey Danger. The group had the number one song in the country several years ago, then struggled, then disbanded, and have now reformed. But while they were broken up, the means of distributing music have changed significantly, away from physical sales of CDs and towards downloads of varying degrees of legality. Jeff Lin, guitarist and keyboardist for Harvey Danger, joins us to talk about how the distribution path of their new album reflects the changing face of the music industry.
