Seattle Post–Intelligencer: Turning the Page
After 146 years in business, the Seattle Post–Intelligencer has stopped publication of its print version of the paper and has moved to an online format. In our series, "Turning the Page," we look back on the history of the P–I and the people behind this venerable institution.

The Seattle Post–Intelligencer traces its origins to the Seattle Gazette, founded in 1863. Through the decades, the paper has been marked by its Hearst ownership and its rivalry with The Seattle Times. P–I journalists have described the paper as a nutty, swinging, hard–drinking and courageous place to call home. While few can argue with the quality of the Seattle Post–Intelligencer's daily news and investigative reports, parent company Hearst only sees a shrinking bottom line. When the paper does close, more than 100 journalists will likely lose their jobs. For P–I staff photographer Grant Haller, the end of the P–I could mean the end of a 40–year career. History is filled with tales of classic newspaper rivalries: the New York Times and the New York Post, the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun Times, the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Francisco Examiner. The Seattle Times and the Seatttle Post–Intelligencer have been fierce competitors for more than a century. This sphere of metal and neon rounds out the city's skyline, and many locals view it as a cultural anchor of our hometown.
