Meet the 2011 Session Interns

Emma Baker

Emma Baker, Senior, Garfield High School (Seattle): I have always been the clumsiest one in the group. I fell down the stage stairs while receiving an award in fourth grade, dropped a $200 cake while presenting it at a dessert auction, and knocked over a set piece in Pacific Northwest Ballet's "The Nutcracker." When my clumsiness posed too many problems for dancing (and cake presenting), I focused my energy on writing. I drummed up characters that became real in my diary entries. I wrote short stories, poems and editorials for my school newspaper. Interning at KUOW will give me an entirely new route to tell stories, with a zero percent chance anyone will catch me tripping while on air.

Kendrick Bradley

Kendrick Bradley, Junior, Sehome High School (Bellingham): I enjoy friendships, making people laugh, driving and the latest technology, especially consumer products. I have a passion for acting, improv, singing and video production. I will soon be participating in my first operetta. I also love biking on Galbraith Mountain in Bellingham, swimming in pools and lakes, and skiing at Mt. Baker. I am often found making music videos on my Mac using Final Cut Pro and recording music with Garage Band. I look forward to learning about radio journalism, meeting new friends, apprenticing with a talented group of professionals, and creating some excellent radio programs at KUOW this summer.

Chetan Chandrashekhar

Chetan Chandrashekhar, Senior, Nathan Hale High School (Seattle): Throughout my life I've been a bit of a nerd, and throughout my life I've had a strong interest in journalism and public policy. I've been an NPR junkie since middle school. I was managing editor of my high school paper until June and loved writing about policy and political issues in the Seattle School District and City Hall. Apart from that, I'm a transit nerd, a member of the Seattle Youth Commission and a cyclist. I speak basic Hindi and Spanish and travel as much as I can. I like learning about my community and sharing my knowledge with other people. I want to learn more about educating the public through journalism.

Delvonte Felder

Delvonte Felder, Senior, Cleveland High School (Seattle): I'm a sports guy. I love to play all sports. I've never really thought that sports and writing can be one, but they can. There's a job called a sports analyst, and it's what I want to be when I grow up, or I should say it's what I'm going to be when I grow up. Besides sports, I like to travel, have fun with friends and family, and eat. I love to eat. Don't expect me to be shy; I'll pretty much eat anything except salad. I'm excited to try something new and join KUOW. This is another positive step towards becoming a sports analyst.

Meron Fikru

Meron Fikru, Senior, Ida B. Wells School for Social Justice at the University of Washington (Seattle): I live in Shoreline, but I spend most of my time in Seattle. I'm Ethiopian, but I was born in London. I've always loved traveling. By fall of my freshman year in college, I'll hopefully be in either New York or California. For now, most of the time you'll find me at the beach, on the Ave, at Yogurtland and Chipotle, at one of the UW libraries, or at practice for my step team. Ten years from now, you might find me on a different continent. I'm just enjoying my youth.

Max Moonpenny Hutton

Max Moonpenny Hutton, Sophomore, Nova High School (Seattle): I love to roller skate. I've skated with a roller derby team for three seasons and their travel team for two. I've always loved to perform. I play musical instruments including guitar, drums, ukulele and accordion, and I love to sing, belly dance and make art. I enjoy meeting new people and one of the things I love and value most in this world is the fact the earth contains a large variety of unique and different cultures. Something unique about me? I've performed in a small circus — stilting, doing acrobatics, and acting — since I was four years old.

Kamna Shastri

Kamna Shastri, Senior, Inglemoor High School (Kenmore): I can't live without all types of tea, music, dance, films (especially those of a South Asian nature), bright colors, bling, poetry and, above all, people. I can, however, live without judgments and stereotypes. I can't stand doing nothing — it drives me crazy. I thrive on being out and about, taking new chances, stretching my limits and getting to know all types of people. I strive to understand peoples' different cultures, values and experiences because I find that delving into the differences allows for a sense of unity to naturally unfold. I'm absolutely thrilled to experience and learn from KUOW this summer.

Katherine Sims

Katherine Sims, Junior, Holy Names Academy (Seattle): I have always loved radio, and I've found myself so addicted to NPR that I think my house feels literally empty without its sound. I spend most of my time either at school or on the water rowing with my crew team. I'm also on my school's debate team, and I sometimes love arguing a little too much. With what little free time I have, I enjoy music, chocolate, old movies, re–reading Harry Potter and exploring Seattle with friends. I love discovering quirky things that make the Pacific Northwest unique. I'm eager to pursue my passion for the art of communication this summer and to learn how to listen to — and tell — a great story!
