KUOW Puget Sound Public Radio is Seattle’s NPR news station. We are an independent, nonprofit news organization producing award-winning journalism, podcasts and events in service to the 3.9 million people in our coverage area. We have an outstanding opportunity for a Producer, Seattle Now (Producer 2 – Podcast) to join our team to produce multimedia content for KUOW’s flagship news podcast, Seattle Now. Working with the Editor and News Host, develop ideas, pre-interview guests, provide host with background research, and write host introductions and interview questions. Gather sound and conduct interviews in the field as assigned. Oversee studio recording sessions. Mix audio pieces and prepare podcasts for publishing.

JOB SUCCESS SUMMARY

A successful producer will thrive in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment. They will have the ability to identify news stories that will interest local listeners and to execute distinctive content on quick deadlines. This position is team-oriented and requires outstanding communications and collaboration: maintaining positive relationships internally, and supporting fellow producers, editor, and host with production needs is essential.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Segment Production (75%)

• Identify, pitch and produce news and culture stories grounded in Seattle and Western Washington.

• Execute multiple segments per week. This includes researching, pitching, booking, scripting, engineering, mixing audio and preparing episodes for publishing. Additionally, execute segments on multiple timelines—have short term segments while also having long term segments in the pipeline.

• Develop a breadth of sources from communities across the Puget Sound area, including identifying and pre-interviewing new voices to have on air.

• Execute work and planning within established guidelines, making decisions and initiating actions with consultation from an editor. Creates solutions for problems and adjusts quickly to change.

• Communicate clearly, thoroughly and promptly with editor, host and fellow producers

Writing (20%)

• Write scripts and tape for fellow producers quickly and thoroughly. In depth listening, providing clear and concise notes on needed changes for both day of stories, and longer chases.

Other duties as assigned (5%)

• May back up other producers as assigned;

• Attend and participate in department or organization meetings and trainings; • Provide production support for on-air fundraising drives;

• Support internal station initiatives.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree and two years of professional broadcast journalism experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Knowledge of professional broadcast and journalistic standards and practices.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Duties may occasionally require evening and weekend work when necessary to meet critical deadlines.

• Cubicle/open workspace environment which may result in additional or higher levels of noise and visual distractions. • Position is suitable/eligible for hybrid/occasional telework.
