KUOW’S CURIOSITY CLUB GOES QUEER FOR PRIDE MONTH.

KUOW is curating a cohort of inquisitive humans for a Pride-themed Curiosity Club pop-up dinner to explore the idea that surprising stories and great food can transform a group of strangers into a community. We’re looking for folks who are eager to connect with people who are different than the ones they usually engage with.

Queeriosity Club members will be invited to attend our Jodie Patterson event at the Impact Hub on Thursday, June 6, and then join us for curious conversation and dinner at The Cloud Room on Capitol Hill the following night on Friday, June 7.

Our dinner party conversation will be fueled by some of KUOW's most surprising stories featuring LGBTQ-themes.

Applicants who are able to attend our Jodie Patterson event and the Queeriosity Club dinner will receive priority consideration.

It's like a queer bookless book club. Or a nerdy LGBTQ supper club. (Or what Jennifer Hegeman said.)

Apply using our online form. The application deadline is Friday, May 10 at 5 p.m. We will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis.

When: Two engagements on two consecutive evenings to kick off Pride Month: Thursday, June 6 (Jodie Patterson event) and Friday, June 7 (Queeriosity Club dinner).

Where: Seattle. Our Jodie Patterson event will be at The Impact Hub in Pioneer Square. The Queeriosity Club dinner will be at The Cloud Room on Capitol Hill.

What’s the Jodie Patterson event all about?

Race, Gender and Bold Parenting: Jodie Patterson on Raising Her Transgender Son

KUOW and The Fold present a conversation with Brooklyn-based author and activist, Jodie Patterson. Patterson will engage in an informed and inclusive exploration of the complex themes surrounding raising a transgender child. The evening will consist of a discussion about her book, The Bold World: A Memoir of Family and Transformation, an interview with KUOW journalist Jeannie Yandel and audience Q&A.

How much does this cost?

Nothing. There is no cost for selected Queeriosity Club members. Tickets to our Jodie Patterson event and the Queeriosity Club dinner are included.

How does this work?

A few weeks before the Queeriosity Club dinner, guests will be notified which 5 pieces of multimedia KUOW content will serve as our “homework” to inspire our conversation. For example, homework assignments might explore a photo essay, a podcast episode, and articles. Club members can prepare for the dinner by checking out all of the assigned content or doing a deep dive into three or four of the pieces.

The dinners will be delicious and the discussion will be informal. KUOW’s Community Engagement Producer Kristin Leong will facilitate.

At the end of our Queeriosity Club dinner, Club members will be invited to share questions and story ideas with our reporters and brainstorm collaboration ideas with our Community Engagement team.

What about the food?

Dinner will be provided by The Flying Apron. Everything will be delicious, vegan and gluten-free.

Why do I have to submit a writing sample in my application?

We're eager to hear about and share your experience of our experiment!

Queeriosity Club members who can commit to writing a 400--1000 word reflection within one week of our Club dinner will receive priority consideration.

Your writing sample can be on any topic--we’re looking for an example of your voice and the kind of content you’re interested in. Published essay? Great. Funny Facebook post or musings from your blog? That works too. Go to KUOW.org/curiosityclub to see examples of reflections from previous Curiosity Club members.

What if none of my writing is published online yet?

No problem. You can send us a writing sample on any topic in the body of an email to engage@kuow.org with “Queeriosity Club Writing Sample” in the subject line. No attachments please.

What if I’m more of a audio/visual person than a writer?

Also, no problem. Instead of a writing sample you can share a link to an example of your A/V work in the application. You can email us a sample at engage@kuow.org with “Queeriosity Club A/V Sample” in the subject line.

Who will be at the Queeriosity Club diner?

In addition to our curious cohort of Queeriosity Club members, KUOW reporters who created the content that will serve as our homework assignments will be invited to join us.

Do I have to be part of the LGBTQ community to apply?

No. Members of the LGBTQ community and allies will be warmly welcomed.

Can I apply if I’ve already participated in KUOW Curiosity Club?

Yes.

Who should apply?

Club members will be selected with the aim of building an engaged cohort of folks who reflect the diverse perspectives and experiences of our surrounding community. People of color, members of the LGBTQ community, and inquisitive omniverts are encouraged to apply. Allies will be warmly welcomed.

Applicants who can commit to attending our June 6 event featuring author and activist Jodie Patterson and the June 7 Queeriosity Club dinner and who agree to create a reflection of their experience will receive priority consideration. Applicants must be 21 or older.

How can I apply?

Fill out our online form. We will review applications on a rolling basis. The application deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2019.
