Seattle public transit survives blitz on Seahawks celebration day

Seahawks fans attending the victory parade rushed to public transit on Wednesday — and those transit systems were stretched to their limits.

It was like the Super Bowl of transit commutes.

Sound Transit huddled up, then pulled in extra trains from the 2-line and put them on the 1-line —but they weren’t enough to carry away the record-breaking crowds.

The Seahawks fans threatened to blitz the trains.

“I was so shocked, because it was already so full, and people kept pushing in,” said UW student Jeff Lin.

So Sound Transit beefed up its defensive line, stationing workers at the escalators who kept riders out until the platform was clear enough.

And King County Metro sent in some safeties, after receiving reports that overcrowded buses were passing people by in places like Issaquah.

In the morning, it sent them to Eastside park-and-rides, and to Northgate, where full Sound Transit trains from Lynnwood were unable to take on more passengers.

The agency plans to run the same play Wednesday afternoon — in reverse.

A Sound Transit spokesperson said they hired an extra 265 security staff for the day.
