KUOW's RadioActive Youth Media is proud to offer our advanced journalism workshop. Thirteen graduates of our introduction to journalism workshop will spend the spring at KUOW.

During that time, they will gain advanced audio production and journalism skills as well as experience in community engagement. Our editorial team will produce their own feature stories and podcasts on topics of their choice. Our community engagement team will connect with our audience through social media and live events. Subscribe to the RadioActive podcast to hear what they create.

Applications are open for RadioActive’s Summer 2019 Introduction to Journalism workshop.

Kamil Saad, Senior, Inglemoor High School and running start, Cascadia College

I love learning about the world around us because I find it fascinating how much there is to learn and how many possibilities are out there. I try to be conscious of my impact on the world, so I do my best to be sustainable. In my free time, I enjoy going on bike rides or spending time with friends. One of my favorite things to do with friends is to play board games or Dungeons & Dragons. One of my main goals is to make as many people laugh as possible. I hope to pursue a career in science, but I am still figuring out what to do with all the possibilities available to me.

Meghana Kakubal, Junior, Mercer Island High School

Many of my friends call me impossible. That could be because of my crazy imagination or my endless curiosity. But I take that as the biggest compliment because that curiosity and imagination are exactly what ushered me into the world of journalism. Having also been an avid reader since childhood, I now find myself immersed in stories all over. As a member of my high school’s radio class, I’ve interviewed fascinating people and thrived on the experience of meeting new people. I also have a tremendous passion for music and I’m learning Carnatic vocal, Hindustani flute, Western flute, and the saxophone. My hobbies include photography and anything to do with movies. I look forward to contributing as a part of this program and learning as much as I can about quality journalism!

Soraya Marashi, Sophomore, University of Washington

I've always had a strong love for writing and storytelling. RadioActive gave me an opportunity to create my own original story and share it with an audience, so I am incredibly excited to be back in action! I am naturally a very creative person, so I have always loved listening to music, watching movies, and reading books. I am also very passionate about giving back to my community, and journalism is the perfect way for me to use my creative talents to do just that. I love learning about different cultures and ideas, and above all, I love getting to know different types of people. I'm a total social butterfly! I can't wait to further develop my skills and interests in this workshop, and take another step towards achieving my dream of being a journalist and podcaster.

Zuheera Ali, Freshman, Seattle Pacific University

I am a reluctant K-pop stan, attempted vegetarian and lover of the original Law and Order up to the 9th season. I also am a fan of historical documentaries, especially Ken Burns (shout out to PBS for making his work streamable). I’ve filled out several bios in my time as a RadioActivian but always have the same sort of anxiety that I’ll sound awkward and uncultured. Which I am, so I guess it works out.

Abay Estifanos, Senior, Tahoma High School and running start, Green River College

I’ve been playing the drums since middle school, and stemmed out to other musical instruments and software since. I have also skateboarded since I was eleven. Journalism allows me to express creativity in the same way music does, as well as giving me the space to discuss social issues or surface unrepresented groups in a way music cannot do.

Aliyah Musaliar, Freshman, University of Washington

Storytelling through any creative mean has always attracted me, whether that be through visual arts or audio production. I'm fascinated with the ability for people to outline and recreate emotions to share with others, whether that be through paint strokes or the mixing of tape. I plan to enter the legal field in order to help others understand the story of marginalized people, beyond paperwork. Outside of my love for radio and law, I love to read, doodle, watch Criterion films, and read random Wikipedia pages.

Enya Garcia, Freshman, Bellevue College

I have a deep interest in social sciences and am hoping to major in Sociology. I am a down to earth and mostly introverted person, but I love to stay busy. I like going to music and art shows, and I love learning about astrology and anything related to the occult. I am also Vice President of the Latin American Club at my school, and I'm hoping to further my involvement with the Latinx community. I want to learn more about teaching and connecting with a community.

Hannah Schoettmer, Junior, Hazen high School

I've always been interested in storytelling, and finding a way to incorporate that into my life is something I'm always striving to do. Besides public radio, I also love thrift shopping, playing guitar and electric bass, creative writing, and going to wacky art events. Right now, I'm also doing the Young Writer's Cohort at Hugo House, the Teen Editorial Staff with TeenTix, and the Teen Art Council at the Bellevue Art Museum. I dream of one day working in a career where I get to tell stories, in whatever form that may take.

Jadenne Radoc Cabahug, Junior, Kentridge High School and running start, Green River College

I’m interested in journalism because I think it’s something I was meant to do. I enjoy chasing a story, talking to different sorts of people, and the ability to create something on my own for others to use. I’ve visited and lived in different places, and it’s always amazing to see how different and similar people are. I speak many languages, love my husky, Hiwakea, and my friends and family. I live to dream that I’ll be a big time journalist and through RadioActive, I believe I’m getting there.

Joshua Fernandes, Junior, Ballard High School

I was just an ordinary junior at Ballard High School, playing the bass and participating in the digital film program. However, one day I was bitten by a bug which changed my life. The writing bug. Since then, I’ve participated in the Summer 2018 RadioActive program and currently work as an Editor in the TeenTix Newsroom.

Lila Shroff, Junior, Mercer Island High School

The only thing I enjoy more than listening to a great story is telling one. This yearning to tell stories first manifested itself through theater. After performing in numerous productions at theatres such as ACT Theatre and Youth Theatre Northwest, I started exploring other forms of self-expression, including poetry, filmmaking, screenwriting, improv, photography and now radio! Apart from being involved with RadioActive, I am the Communications Director at my high school radio station, KMIH 88.9 The Bridge, where I co-host a weekly show called "Real Time" with fellow RadioActivian Meghana Kakubal. I have also been involved with Reel Grrls, a non-profit feminist media organization, where I have created videos covering events such as the Seattle Women’s March, Upstream and Sasquatch! Music Festival. Although I have a passion for travel and adventure, perhaps rooted in having spent my sophomore year studying abroad in the south of Spain, I will always be a true Seattleite at heart.

Keya Roy, Senior, Issaquah High School and running start, Bellevue College

Besides being an arts, science, and politics junkie, I absolutely love experiencing culture by creating it, and that's exactly what brought me to RadioActive. Though I hope to study Environmental Science and Policy in college, radio has become one of my favorite creative outlets and platforms. On any given weekend, you can find me registering voters at concerts, eating Molly Moon's ice cream, or here chilling at KUOW!

Medha Kumar, Junior, Eastlake High School

I enjoy expressing myself creatively in almost anything I do. I love playing the clarinet and learning Indian art forms as well. Helping the community preserve nature is also a passion of mine. Conversing with others in multiple languages allows me to understand and interact with the many people that I meet. Overall, being kind to others is most important to me. Now you know a little bit about me, but I hope you can learn more about my perspective through the content that I create here at RadioActive.
