Welcome KUOW's Spring 2016 RadioActive Youth Producers
KUOW's RadioActive Youth Media is proud to offer our spring journalism workshop at the Southwest Library in partnership with Seattle Public Library.
Six teens, aged 16-18, will spend 12 weeks learning what it means to be a journalist. During that time, they'll gain the skills to create radio stories. They'll do all of the research, interviews, writing, voicing and editing to produce their own feature stories on topics of their choice.

Conor Gormally, Senior, Garfield High School
Growing up with parents who are both visual artists has taught me the importance of creativity, expression, and collaboration. I am a classical musician, an ocean sciences nerd, a programmer, a writer, an athlete, a swing dancer and a storyteller. Reading, along with imagining stories while wandering in my backyard, made up the majority of my free time as a child. The past few years I’ve become a podcast junkie and I spend my commute home from school every day listening to people telling stories. I hope to learn how to write, produce and tell stories that will do for others what podcasts like The Memory Palace, 99% Invisible, and the TED Radio Hour have done for me.
Hanad Jama, Junior, West Seattle High School
I want to explore the world. I have a passion for music, particularly hip-hop, and when I listen to hip hop I feel like I can escape from all my social problems and just express myself. I am an athlete; I play basketball and run track competitively. During my free time I love to help around my community. I am a very goal-orientated person, meaning in the future I hope to grow as a person.
Feven Mekonenn, Senior, Seattle Preparatory School
I am a workaholic who’s had five different jobs in the course of three years in everything from education at the University of Washington, to the City of Seattle, to the office of a small trucking company. I strive to be a dynamic activist in my community as a scholar in residence at Town Hall Seattle and a host of Rainier Scholars Frequency for Hollow Earth Radio. Apart from that, I love curating reading lists for friends on Facebook to share my love of literature. But don’t be fooled by my serious side: I draw my energy from Mali instrumental music, comedy podcasts and Ethiopian movies.
Jad Vianu, Sophomore, The Bush School
I come from two very different cultures and I have lived on either side of the country. I have always gravitated towards the creative spectrum. I have taken classes and am decently proficient in photography, Adobe Photoshop and graphic design in general. I have also owned my own clothing brand and sold over 50 articles of clothing. Most of all I look forward to finding out where my life will take me.
Melissa Takai, Junior, Mount Rainier HS
Despite my ever changing list of interests, I’ve always gone back to my love of film, theatre, and the arts in general. I hope to incorporate these passions into my future career somehow because I can’t imagine a life without fulfilling work and meaningful achievements. On another note, I love animals and playing Bossa Nova songs on the guitar. I’m also very adventurous when it comes to food!
Tori Zivkovic, Senior, NOVA High School
A special snowflake; I am not. I live what I consider a mundane life: going to school in the mornings and doing homework in the evenings. What differs is that I don’t go to school because I have to, but because I revel in the intellectual stimulation. There is one thing that repeatedly catches my interest and that is the question: why? "Why” opens doors into new worlds and lets you see all the layers and chasms beneath the surface.
