And the name of Seattle's new NHL hockey team is...

After months of speculation, and fan debate, Seattle's NHL team has finally settled on a name.

Seattle has released The Kraken.

The name "The Seattle Kraken" was announced at the Climate Pledge Arena -- currently under construction -- Thursday morning.

“We know that this team, the Seattle Kraken, is going to inspire hockey players here in the Northwest and sports fans all over the world," said Kyle Boyd, the team's director of youth and community development.

“It’s just so fun to say,” he added. “I know the Kraken is a seafaring creature, but this team will act as a bridge connecting people."

The Kraken comes with a new "S" logo that includes two shades of blue, and a red eye.

The team name announcement was made shortly after 9:10 a.m. Thursday. By 9:45 a.m., Seattle's hockey team was already noted on the Wikipedia page for "Kraken."

The Seattle Kraken

For those who missed that day in mythology class, the Kraken is a mythological sea creature, often referenced in Norse tales. Seafaring lore from throughout the North Atlantic depicts the squid/octopus like creature tormenting sailors.

The Thursday morning announcement included an online performance by Seattle singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile. A Kraken flag is also being raised on the Space Needle.

The team name comes with an online store -- releasethekrakenstore.com -- which briefly crashed following the announcement. Net proceeds between July 23 and Aug. 21 go to YouthCare, Community Passageways, and the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle.

Several names had been floating around Seattle since the NHL announced it approved a 32nd team for its league in 2018 -- some more serious than others. There were the Sockeyes, Totems, and Evergreens. Even the Seattle Freeze.

But on Thursday morning, NHL Seattle announced that "The Seattle Kraken" shall be taking the ice at the newly-remodeled Climate Pledge Arena, or what some are already calling the "green house."

The former KeyArena is currently under a massive renovation to prepare the facility for the hockey team. Its first season is expected in 2021-22. Tickets for the inaugural season already sold out with more than 30,000 people making deposits.

NHL Seattle is also planning for a 180,000-square-foot practice facility to be constructed around Northgate Mall.
